Tiruvallur

Location

Tiruvallur is a town located on the Chennai-Tirupathi highway, forty-four kilometers from Chennai. The railway station falls mid-way between the Chennai-Arakkonam railway line. A small town, and now the district headquarter of the recently made Tiruvallur district is developing very fast. Being the nearest town to Chennai give it more industrial and commercial importance. Existence of many academic institutions further enhances the strategic importance of Tiruvallur for the city of Chennai.

History

Tiruvallur is realy named as Tiruyavvallur which specifies the sleeping position of the holy lord "Balaji", in the Veeragavar temple of Tiruvallur. Later it was called as Trivellore or Tiruvallur. Today Tiruvallur is well known, one of the reason being the "Veeragavar Temple" temple. The new moon day is very auspicious day for the lord and so for the people of the town.

Tiruvallur is near to most of the important places in the Tamil Nadu. It is about forty-four kilometers from Chennai. It is eighteen kilometers from Sriperumandur, the place where former prime minister of India Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. It is twenty-four kilometers from the town Ponamalli. It is twenty kilometers from Avadi, a military base, where also battle tanks are made. It is fourty-two kilometers from Kanchepuram, the place with many famous temples. It is twenty-eight kilometers from Arakkonam, a very important naval base.

Distance by railways

Tiruvallur is in the middle for the railway route between Chennai Central Railway station and Arakkonam Railway Junction. It takes nearly one-and-half hours to travel from Chennai through local trains (At the expense of eleven rupees) and less than forty minutes through express trains (At the cost of twenty-two rupees). Also it takes nearly forty-five minutes to travel to Arakkonam through local (ticket cost nine rupees) and twenty-five minutes by express trains.

Social and Industrial importance

The most importance religious offering of Tiruvallur is the Veeragavar Temple, a temple of lord Vishnu (Balaji). Many people come from different places to visit the temple on new moon days, a very auspicious day for the god in this temple.

Other importance things in Tiruvallur are Collector's office; Thasidhar's office and Head Post Office since Tiruvallur is the district headquarter. Important and prominent factories such as Hundai Motors, Hindustan Earth Moving Equipmet (in collaboration Caterpillar) and TVS-Delphi are situated in Tiruvallur.
